ADLG AGM & Visit to Cranfield College of Aeronautics 19/03/2001. Kings Norton Library, Cranfield University
Paul Needham, MAGiC Research Officer at Cranfield University, gave a detailed presentation of the MAGiC project for Managing Access to Grey Literature Collections. Paul explained that in the UK grey literature, and particularly technical engineering reports in all their various formats, are an under-utilised high quality – high relevancy resource. This is because major collections are scattered and individual items are difficult to find because much grey literature is not catalogued. The MAGiC project aims to address this need to enhance awareness, access and use of key collections of technical reports for the benefit of UK engineers and UK PLC. Cranfield University is working on this project in partnership with various organisations including the National Reports Collection of the British Library Document Supply Centre, DERA, Loughborough University Department of Information Science, the Public Records Office and SIRSI Ltd. The project brings together initiatives within and between these organisations to do the following: to enhance collections development, management and retention, by mapping key holdings and exploring the rationalisation of collections; to enhance visibility by creating a Distributed National Reports Catalogue; and to enhance access via electronic storage and supply of documents - One such initiative is the Cranfield Hyperion project to create a core electronic archive of engineering report literature. Raising Awareness of Engineering Information Resources, Thu 11 Jan 2001
An enthusiastic audience nearly 40 strong gathered at the British Library for the launch of the joint ASLIB AEG / EILC "Student Guide to Engineering Information Resource Centres".
David Baynes, the driving force behind the guide, introduced the launch. The guide’s author, Bob Rhodes, described the decision-making process that led to the Guide’s A3 fold-up size – handy for both the student pocket and the student notice-board. Some 140 resources are listed on the guide, as well as tips and advice to steer the engineering student through the information-gathering process.
Barrie Ross-Dow gave a brief preview of the online version; still very much a work in progress, the online version shows great promise. The domain name is www.helpengine.org
Continuing the theme of raising awareness of information sources, John Harrington of Cranfield University spoke of the MAGiC project. (View the ppt presentation.)
The session concluded with a description of the BL readers’ admission process – of 140,000 live users, 6,000 describe themselves as researching in engineering.

Preservation 2000, 6-8 Dec 2000
An international conference on digital preservation held in York, England. Sponsored by Cedars, JISC, the Research Libraries Group and OCLC. A venue to share, disseminate, and discuss current issues concerning the preservation of digital materials. A one-day workshop preceded the conference to focus on the information infrastructures for preserving digital materials over the long term. A full report is available at http://www.rlg.ac.uk/events/pres-2000/.

3rd RSLP Collection Description Concertation Day
The aim of the meeting was to update delegates on UKOLN work, and to stimulate dialogue about this important area of activity. Project representatives from 1st round RSLP projects talked about their experience, the issues they have had to address, and the approach they have adopted. A report on the day is available from http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/rslp/.

Project Showcase, BL Conference Centre, St Pancras, Tue 17 Oct 2000.
The first of several events intended to spread information more widely about some of the projects funded from the CPP Call for Proposals 1999. Three projects gave brief presentations, including MAGiC. (View the ppt presentation.)
