Open Archives Initiative - the OAI metadata harvesting protocol aims to supply an application-independent interoperability framework for use by a variety of communities engaged in publishing content on the Web. The OAI protocol permits metadata harvesting, resulting in an interoperability framework between Data Providers exposing metadata about the content in their systems, and Service Providers requesting and using the returned metadata as a basis for building value-added services.
